A monocase font from a tube; very decorative; makes you think of graffiti; written freely with a tube of “Fixogum.”

Who can remember the green tube which was never missing from the table of any graphic artist…? Fixogum is glue which is removable and leaves no traces since the remains can be rubbed away with your fingertips. It was used for gluing all layouts up until the introduction of Apple Macintosh. You could even play with it and with time, a considerable pile of eraser-like lumps accumulated.

This green tube in the hand of the writer resulted in a roundabout way in the font with the same name, FIXOGUM. It was simply practice in writing, along to the music of DeLaSoul, during which a large page was created. With a tube of FIXOGUM the entire alphabet appeared rhythmically ordered on the paper. Afterwards the traces not yet visible were traced with a wide brush using blue ink. In conclusion the ritual of rubbing off the glue was carried out. The negative form of the font remained. A few years passed before the work of digitalizing was concluded.

The term ”capital typeface“ doesn’t seem quite fitting. FIXOGUM consists of capital letters only; yet, because the letters are bound to each other, even if in a peculiar way, a somewhat fluent font is still the result. The forms are archaic and express something of an original font. Writing with a full tube of FIXOGUM required a procedure which was economical.

The setting down and picking up of the “tool” were especially difficult. And so were created the superfluous connections and the unique abridgements.
This font is one-of-a-kind and thus, can’t be copied. FIXOGUM presents a pleasant structure. The lines appear to be closed and all in all, FIXOGUM resembles graffiti, which just might have to do with the writer’s past…
